The privilege to own my time.

As of a couple of years ago, my mother made a joke about my persona. She said that I was probably already unemployable at the age of 20. Now, I’ve come to think that’s true.

For some time now, I’ve been thinking a lot of what I want to do with my time. I’m finishing by bachelors degree in about a year, and I’ll need to find somewhere to get my pay check from. Up until now, that hasn’t been a problem due to student loans, but I won’t have those forever.

What I’ve been pondering is what kind of job I’d like to have after my degree. And I realised that the question was poorly put. I don’t want a type of job. I figured that out a couple of years ago, that’s what my mom saw in me. The questions should instead be something like: What do I want to do? How much do I want to do that? Who do I want to work with? Where do I want to work?

And so, a way broader path opened up for me, which also felt a lot more attractive. All of a sudden, I could both work as a substitute, as a coach, as a project manager and continue studying. All at the same time.

Realising that my options aren’t as locked in as I might have thought them to be was a great relief. That’s what I want to share today.

What options aren’t you currently seeing, because you’re asking the wrong questions?
